Our recent stay at Tapatio Springs was very much enjoyed by our family. We took the two-hour scenic drive from Austin, arrived on a Friday evening with plans to head into San Antonio on Saturday for a little exploring. After checking out the new pool and serene scenery, I was a little disappointed that we'd have to leave the property at all during our stay.
We dined at La Cascada Table and Bar, the superb restaurant onsite led by Executive Chef Michael Collins. With large windows overlooking the golf course that let the big skies in, we were immediately relaxed from our drive and ready to kick off our fun weekend away.
My kids were so thrilled to have watermelon at each meal! It's a summertime favorite.
Chicken Fried Steak and Cheese Grits.
La Cascada offers casual Texas-inspired fare, a large wine list, and exceptional service. Diners can be seated both inside and outside on the deck, an option that's nice on the Friday and Saturday nights when live music enhances the ambiance. The dishes include some that you'd come to expect from a restaurant touting Texas cuisine, including Chicken Fried Steak, Honey Fried Chicken (served with a slice of watermelon), cheese grits, steak and one of our favorites, mac 'n cheese.
After dinner is a perfect time to head to one of the fire pits located throughout the property to star gaze, make s'mores and get to know others who are staying at the resort. With it being summer in Texas, we weren't expecting to be able to roast marshmallows for s'mores over an open fire during our stay, but were quite surprised that it cooled down just enough on a hot July day when the sun set to do just that. We purchased the already prepared s'mores kits (available in the restaurant for $8), put on our swim suits and headed to the pool (open until 10:30 p.m. on weekends) to swim and make s'mores in between. We brought along our bottle of wine leftover from dinner with us to drink pool and fireside, making it a quintessential summer night, done just right!
Make s'more, jump in pool. Repeat ten times.
There are two pools onsite: one for adults only and one for kids. Since we had our kids with us, we only swam in the pool that allows children, but the adult one looked just as nice. It's a cool feature to have for those adults traveling without kids to have a pool all to themselves. I've made a mental note for a future mom's weekend away! Also noted for my next stay is the onsite spa with massages, facials and more. I just couldn't squeeze that in this time around since we spent so much time at the pool but it's on my list for the next stay.
The family pool offers a slide, play equipment, enough seating for even the busiest of days, a hot tub, two propane fire pits and a bar. You can bet we took full advantage of being able to sip on a freshly prepared ice cold margarita while sitting in the pool with the kids. During the day, there's music playing in the background and lots of families enjoying their time away together. The slide is only open when the lifeguard is on duty.
King suites, double and queen rooms are available and are situated strategically around the property so no matter which building you are in, you are still close to all amenities. The rooms are spacious and offer comfortable beds, two water bottles, a Keurig machine with coffee and tea selections and private patios. Our room's sliding door opened almost directly to the family pool so it was convenient to come and go with the kids.
Horseshoes, picnic benches and a fire pit!
There are walking trails all over the property, perfect for families who also travel with their four legged members, but we didn't explore too much on foot due to the hot July temperatures. We are already planning a trip back this fall with our two dogs to explore more of the property.
