10 Places to Get Ice Cream in Austin

When it’s 102 degrees outside and your kids are screaming for ice cream, you should definitely give in to their pleas. The only problem is that with so many great local places, you’ll have to try at least one a week to get through them all by Labor Day. We are confident you are up to challenge.

Lick—Locally-sourced milk and cream, seasonal flavors and homemade waffle cones add up to some very lickable ice cream!

Dolce Neve Gelato—Started by three Italians, Dolce Neve or “sweet snow” offers up made-from-scratch gelato prepared using traditional methods learned in Bologna and Pisa, Italy. It’s the real deal, so mangia, mangia, mangia.

Amy’s Ice Creams—Started in 1984, it’s hard to beat this Austin institution if you’re in the mood for say, Mexican vanilla ice cream with strawberries, gummy bears and nutter butters crushed in on the spot.

Holla Mode—Believe the hype about this Thai-style ice cream trailer on Barton Springs. Sure you’ll have to wait in line, but when you take a bite from your cup full of deliciousness made right before your eyes, any annoyance will melt away.

Sandy’s Hamburgers and Frozen Custard—This Barton Springs mainstay is old-school in all the right ways. Try a chocolate malt, with or without the fries.

Sweet Ritual—Can ice cream be delicious and dairy-free? It can be when you get it at Sweet Ritual. In addition to their vegan desserts, they also cater to many other dietary needs.

Cow Tipping Creamery—If you’re a lover of soft-serve, you’ll definitely want to try this South Austin food truck that dishes out cones, sundaes, shakes and more with a dollop of tasty and unusual toppings.

Moojo—Pick your cookie, pick your cream then wrap your mouth around one of the best ice cream sandwiches in town.

Spun—For a healthy dose of science with your sweet treat, try out this East Austin shop that uses liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze your order right on the spot.

Jim-Jim’s Water Ice— Somewhere between a sno-cone and a popsicle, Jim-Jim’s isn’t exactly ice cream, but you really can’t spend a summer in Austin without having at least one little cup.
