Day Trips From Austin: New Braunfels

The City of New Braunfels located in between Austin and San Antonio, was founded in 1845 under German charter and has grown into a bustling community with lots to offer. You can easily spend a full day checking out these family-friendly destinations: 


New Braunfels Railroad Museum

Exhibits at this train museum include a Pullman Dining Car, a Box Car, Caboose, Locomotive and more. Additionally, there are a variety of artifacts and photographs from the golden age of railroading on display. Right next to the museum is one of the busiest North/South Union Pacific railroad tracks with over 30 trains passing by each day, making it a great spot for train lovers in the family. Attend Kids’ Fun Day on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 am to 2 pm. Kids of all ages 'Run the Train' and can become a Junior Engineer!

Landa Park  

This 51-acre riverside park offers two swimming pools, a miniature train ride, jogging trails, paddle boats, miniature golf, playgrounds and more! Set in the shade of giant oak trees, picnics are in ample supply for enjoying a summer breeze on the Comal River. Read more about Landa Park here.

Note: Weekends can be incredibly busy in the popular park. If you plan to go on a Saturday or Sunday, try to get there as early as possible, especially if you're hoping to snag a bbq or picnic bench.

McKenna Children’s Museum 

Discover a world of arts and creativity, science and technology, culture, health and history with exhibits that include: Lend-A-Hand Ranch, the Grocery Store, Outside the Lines Art Studio, the Tot Spot, Destination Space and many more. Your child can be a doctor, banker and gardener in the morning, a scientist, artist and inventor in the afternoon! Imagination is all it takes to invent a healthy adventure at The McKenna Children’s Museum. Note: Bring a change of clothing in case your kiddo gets wet at the Outdoor Water Table!

Prince Solms Park  

Tube down the cool Comal River, play a round of disc golf, and enjoy the many amenities of the park. Tip: Get there early enough to snag a picnic bench and BBQ grill. The famous Tube Chute will please the adrenaline lovers in the family while there are wading areas along the Comal River for the younger members of the family.
